LAS VEGAS - The Wildcats found their moxie at the plate and earned their first win of the year, splitting their final two games at the Eller Media Stadium Classic.
The Weber State University softball team pounded out 13 hits during its two games at Eller Media Stadium on Sunday afternoon, rallying for a 3-1 win over Cal State Northridge in their first game, before suffering a narrow 2-0 setback to New Mexico State in their tournament finale.
Freshman first baseman Krystin Kubo and junior designated player Desiree Mejia both had strong days at the play, leading the Wildcats hitting charge. Kubo went 3-for-3 with a two RBI single in the seventh inning that brought the game-winning run across the plate against the Matadors, while Mejia went 4-for-4 with a double during the two games.
Junior right hander Kylee Colvin picked up the win against Northridge, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out five.
Junior shortstop Brooke Silva and freshman right fielder Jazmine Thompson each had two hits for the Wildcats, while sophomore catcher Janel Cunningham and senior center fielder London Clarke each had singles. Freshman left fielder Rudi Barrios had a sacrifice fly against Northridge, which brought the game-tying run across with one out in the top of the seventh.
Northridge scored their lone run of the game in the first inning and nearly made it stand up, despite Weber State getting runners on in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings.
The Wildcats, however, finally caught fire in the seventh as Mejia led off the inning with a single to center field. Freshman Dusti Blair pinch ran for Mejia, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Jazmine Thompson reached on a fielder's choice, with Blair advancing to third.
Barrios brought Blair across the plate to tie the game with a sacrifice fly to left field, with Silva Cunningham advancing on walks to load the bases, setting the stage for Kubo, who singled up the middle to score Thompson and Silva.
Colvin got two strikeouts in the bottom half of the inning and freshman third baseman Alyson Kulp caught a liner to end the game.
In the second game, the Wildcats suffered a tough 2-0 loss despite having runners on base in all seven innings. Mejia was 3-for-3 in the designated player spot, while Thompson had two hits. Weber State had six hits in all against the Aggies.
Weber State will return home briefly this week before heading back out on the road on Wednesday for a three-day tournament at Long Beach State, where they will face UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton, Virginia Tech, North Dakota State and UNLV. The Wildcats home opener is schedule for March 13 vs. Utah State.
