GREELEY, Colo. – The Weber State University women's softball team earned a split to open up their final Big Sky Conference series on Friday afternoon.

Riding the hot bats of freshman second baseman Brooke Ford and junior catcher Desiree Mejia, the Wildcats won the opening game of the day 6-1, before dropping a tough 5-2 decision to Northern Colorado on the back end of the doubleheader at Butler-Hancock Field.

If it hadn't been for one bad inning in the second game, Weber State might have swept the day as the Wildcats held a 2-0 lead through the top of the fifth before the Bears scored all five half of the inning.

Ford finished the day with four hits and three RBI. She went 3-for-3 with an RBI single in the second inning and an RBI double in the fifth inning of the first game.

Mejia had three hits, including her second home run of the season in the opening game, a two-run shot to left center that turned a one-run lead into a 4-1 advantage, she also had a double and an RBI single in the second game.

Junior shortstop Brooke Silva had two hits, both doubles, on the afternoon, while freshman first baseman Krystin Kubo and sophomore designated player Stephanie Mathias each had singles.

Sophomore right-hander Morgan Allaband earned the win on the mound, scattering three hits with six strikeouts.

Weber State outhit Northern Colorado 12-7 on the afternoon.

In the day's opening game, the Wildcats led 1-0 after Ford singled up the middle to bring home redshirt freshman pinch runner Kyralyn Kawasaki and then took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning on Ford's double to left center that scored freshman left fielder Rudi Barrios from first base.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Silva walked and Mejia hit a two-RBI home run to left center to make it 4-1. In the seventh, Mathias hit an RBI single down the right field to scored freshman pinch runner Jessica Chaulkin and make it 5-1, and then sophomore Janel Cunningham scored on an error by the Bears' shortstop for the five-run advantage and the Wildcats put UNC down in order in the bottom half of the inning.

In the second game, Weber State took a 1-0 lead on Mejia's RBI single to center field that scored Mathias in the third inning, and then went ahead 2-0 in the fifth after Ford's RBI single to right field scored freshman pinch runner Dusti Blair.

Disaster struck for the Wildcats in the bottom half of the inning however, as the Bears scored five runs off just two hits and an error a WSU walked three to load the bases with one out.

Weber State (4-13 Big Sky, 9-38 overall) and Northern Colorado (6-11 Big Sky, 16-29-1 overall) will meet today in the series' – and season – finale for both teams. First pitch is set for set for 1 p.m. at Butler-Hancock Field.
