OGDEN, Utah – Southern Utah's Logan Harker scored a crossing shot from the right wing in the 97th minute and the Thunderbirds upset the Weber State University women's soccer team 2-1 in overtime in Big Sky Conference action at Wildcat Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats (2-6-1 Big Sky, 5-12-1) were officially eliminated from contention in the postseason with the loss, and will wrap up their 2014 season on Friday when they host rival Idaho State.
Weber State came out firing, recording two shots on goal in the first six minutes, and just narrowly missed out on taking an early lead on a breakaway by junior forward Stacy Bair that was stopped at the last second by Southern Utah goalkeeper Taylor Bolding.
Harker opened up the match scoring against the run of play in the 29th minute with a high shot that went off the top of the gloves of Wildcat goalkeeper Danielle MacKay and fell just inside the far post.
Weber State pressed hard for the equalizer at the end of the first half and was finally rewarded in the opening minutes of the second frame when Bair punched through with her team-leading fifth strike of the year.
The play started on the left side of the field and was played across the top of the box by redshirt freshman defender Alexa MacGoldrick to junior forward Mackenzie Harrison, who tapped it through the Thunderbirds' defense to Bair in the 49th minute.
The assist was Harrison's Big Sky Conference-leading seventh of the year.
Weber State dominated the second half of play and was unlucky to not score a go-ahead goal during a wild 75-second sequence in the middle of the half that saw the Wildcats get four shots, including one went off the crossbar, and two corner kicks.
Harker's match winner in the seventh minute of the extra session was the only shot for either team during the overtime.
