ST. GEORGE – After opening the season with a scintillating win over in-state rival BYU on Thursday, day two of the Red Desert Classic brought the Wildcats back down to earth.

The Weber State University softball team dropped a pair of hard-fought contests at the City of St. George's Canyons Complex, falling 3-1 in eight innings to the University of Texas-Arlington in the opening game, and then dropping a 7-0 decision to the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

“(Junior right-hander) MaCauley (Flint) pitched really well for us, we just didn't string our hits together,” Weber State coach Mary Kay Amicone said. “It's a process. We did some things better, but we have to execute better than we did. I really liked the energy (of the first game).

“(In the second game) we were a couple of plays away from being right there. We have to get better offensively.”

Flint threw seven shutout innings, fanning nine and walking just three, until the Mavericks took advantage of an untimely Wildcat error and the international tiebreaker rule in effect to push in three unearned runs in the eighth inning.

Junior center fielder and leadoff hitter Malia Campos had three of the Wildcats' six hits during the two games, while freshman pinch hitter Sara Hingsberger had an RBI single, bringing in Weber State's lone run of the day in the eighth inning against UTA as the Wildcats tried to rally.

Against Nebraska-Omaha, the Wildcats had three errors that ultimately led to four of the UNO Mavericks' runs, while the Wildcats' offense was stymied, producing just two hits.

Weber State (1-2) will wrap up its participation in the Red Desert Classic on Saturday when the Wildcats take on Grand Canyon at 11 a.m. and in-state rival Utah Valley at 4 p.m. at the Canyons Complex.
