Wildcats sweep two at San Diego Tournament

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Wildcats stormed back during their second day in sunny southern California.
Led by a pair of solid efforts on the mound, and some explosive hitting, the Weber State University softball team swept the opening day of the University of San Diego Tournament, edging former Pacific Coast Softball Conference divisional rival Seattle 2-1 and overpowering Fairleigh Dickinson 7-1 at the USD Softball Complex.

In the first game, Weber State rode an 11 strikeout two-hitter from junior right-hander MaCauley Flint to a nail-biting win over the Redhawks.
Freshman right fielder Sara Hingsberger had the game-winning RBI on a single through the left side with two outs in the sixth inning that brought sophomore third baseman Alyson Kulp across the plate for the 2-1 lead.
Weber State took a 1-0 lead in the game in the third inning when junior center fielder Malia Campos – the Wildcats' leadoff hitter – reached on an error by the Seattle first baseman and freshman second baseman Mackenzi Corta scored from third base.
The Redhawks evened the score on a solo home run in the fourth inning.
In the second game, the Weber State bats pounded out 12 hits in overpowering the Knights.
Campos was 3-for-4 with two RBI, including a triple, while sophomore right fielder Rudi Barrios was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Senior right-hander/designated player Jasmine Ioane was 2-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-RBI double in the seventh inning, and senior shortstop Brooke Silva was 2-for-4.
Senior right-hander Kylee Colvin earned the win, improving to 2-3, as she allowed just one unearned run in six innings before giving way to Flint for the final three outs.
Weber State will be back in action during day two of the USD Tournament, facing the Knights again at 12:30 p.m. MT, followed by a rematch with San Diego at 5:30 p.m.
The Wildcats will wrap up the tournament on Sunday morning with a rematch against Seattle at 9 a.m.
