LOGAN, Utah – A power-hitting performance from senior shortstop Brooke Silva and a breakout game from junior first baseman Kylee Hogue powered the Wildcats to a split with in-state rival Utah State on Tuesday afternoon.

Silva hit .714 across the afternoon and Hogue was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI as the Weber State University softball captured its elusive 20th victory of the year with an 8-3 win over the Aggies at LaRee and LaGrand Johnson Field to cap off the day. USU took the opening contest 6-2.

Silva was 5-for-7 with four and three extra base hits, including a two-run homer during the victory. Silva also had two doubles and slugged 1.429 for the afternoon for Weber State (20-20).

Hogue opened up the scoring for the Wildcats with an RBI triple to right center that scored Silva, and then came across the plate herself on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

Utah State (16-22) tied things up in the bottom half of the inning, but Weber State broke things open again in the third.

After a leadoff popup, the Wildcats put two on with back-to-back walks, and Silva hit an RBI double to left field that scored senior right-hander/designated player Jasmine Ioane, to make it 3-2. Hogue singled up the middle in the next at-bat to score freshman right fielder Sara Hingsberger, followed by a single through the left side by junior catcher Mylee Davis that scored Silva, and sophomore second baseman Brooke Ford singled to right field to scored Hogue and make it 6-2.

Silva added her third hit of the game in the sixth with a two-run shot over the fence at left center that scored both her and Hingsberger, making it 8-2.

Junior right-hander Morgan Allaband earned the win in the circle, allowing just five hits and two earned runs in four innings of work. Senior right-hander Kylee Colvin picked up her first save of the season, allowing just two hits and an unearned run in the final three innings.

In the opening game, Weber State took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single to left field from sophomore third baseman Alyson Kulp, but Utah State came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.

The Wildcats brought one of those runs back in the top of the fourth when junior pinch hitter Stephanie Mathis had a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Silva, making it 3-2.

The Aggies answered that with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, and then tacked on two more in the fifth.

Weber State will be back in action on Friday night against in-state rival BYU. First pitch against the Cougars is set for 5 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally on BYUtv.
