PROVO, Utah – The Wildcats put together one of their strongest games in recent weeks against the Cougars, but finished just short of snagging a breakthrough road win.

Despite 10 hits and several key opportunities with runners in scoring position, the Weber State University softball team fell 7-3 to in-state rival BYU in a non-conference game on Friday night at Gail Miller Field.

Junior first baseman Kylee Hogue notched her second consecutive two-hit game, and freshman right fielder Sara Hingsberger, sophomore right fielder Rudi Barrios, and junior center fielder Malia Campos each tallied a pair of hits for Weber State (20-21).

BYU improved to 22-21 overall, leveling the season series with WSU at 1-1, with a third – and final – meeting of the in-state rivals set for April 30 at Wildcat Softball Complex.

Weber State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, after Campos led off the game with a double to left center, with Hogue hitting a two-out RBI single down the left field line to bring in Campos, and then senior shortstop Brooke Silva made it 2-0 on the play after a fielding error by the Cougars' left fielder.

BYU hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to tie it at 2-2, and then hit a solo homer and a second two-run shot in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead.

The Wildcats made it 5-3 in the third when sophomore third baseman Krystin Kubo hit an RBI single up the middle on a full count that scored Hingsberger.

Weber State trailed 6-3 in the sixth, but had a prime chance to cut into the lead with two on and one out after Barrios doubled to left center and Campos singled and then advanced to second on the throw. The Cougars, however, struck out the potential tying run in the next two at-bats to get out of the inning, and then added a seventh run in the bottom of the inning.

The Wildcats will be back in action on April 25-26 when they host a three-game Big Sky Conference series with Sacramento State at Wildcat Softball Complex.
