Weber State falls 6-1 to BYU in season opener

PROVO, Utah -- The Weber State men's tennis team opened up the 2015 season on Saturday. The Wildcats ultimately dropped a 6-1 decision to BYU.
The Wildcats started out taking the first doubles match. Stefan Cooper and Sanjay Gosswami took down Robin Pfister and Andrey Goryachkov 7-6.
Weber State struggled to pick up the momentum into the singles matches, despite some strong performances, as the Cougars stormed back to claim the 6-1 win.
Landon Barlow, stepped up big for the Wildcats defeating Juan Canales 7-5, 6-4 for the Wildcat victory. Jakub Gewert started out strong winning the first match in his set but was ultimately defeated by Goryachkov 6-3, 2-6, 3-6. Todd Fought and Hou-En Chen won their first sets but could not clinch the wins. Fought fell to Jacob Sullivan 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 and Chen fell to Victor Brown 1-6, 6-3, 10-7. Playing at No. 1 singles was Cooper, who fell in strait sets to BYU's Shane Monroe, 6-4, 7-6, 7-4.
"We were rusty and a little out of shape," Head Coach Brad Ferreira said. "But to be this close at the beginning of the season is encouraging for what is to come."
The tennis team continues their season on Saturday January 24 with a double header starting at Utah State to take on the Aggies and then a home match against Colorado Mesa.
