Wildcats drops 2 matches and defeats Colorado Mesa

Weber State University men's tennis team split a double header Saturday. They fell 4-1 to Utah State and defeated Colorado Mesa 6-1. They took on Air Force on Sunday and fell in a close match 3-4.
Against Utah State, Jakub Gewert defeated Jack Swindells 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 earning the Wildcats lone point. Todd Fought put up a good fight against USU's Marcus Fritz but ultimately fell 6-2, 6-7, 7-5. The Wildcats were swept in the doubles round.
"We started off slow in the doubles against USU and could not get going," Head Coach Brad Ferreira said. "Most of the singles matches were a dog fight. Everyone competed really well. I am very encouraged by how the team did. Despite injuries we still gave them a run for their money."
The Wildcats fared much better against Colorado Mesa. The No. 1 point was claimed by Jordan Lyden from Colorado Mesa. He defeated Stefan Cooper 7-5, 6-2 earning CMU's lone point from the match. Fought defeated Spencer Weinberg 6-3, 7-6. Landon Barlow defeated Andrew Garcia-Rojas 6-0, 6-2. Hou-En Chen defeated Trevor Brown 6-2, 6-2 earning his first win as a Wildcat. Dylan Hansel defeated Ben Schlitchting 7-6, 6-3 and Scott Hintze defeated Duncan Alger 6-0, 6-3.
"There were some weary legs from the morning match but everyone played well and competed hard," Ferreira said.
In the doubles match, Chen and Barlow defeated Garcia-Rojas and Brown 6-1. Hansel and Hintze defeated Schlitchting and Alger 7-5. Weber State couldn't sweep the doubles point. CMU's Lyden and Weinberg took down Cooper and Shao-Po Yin 6-4.
Against Air Force on Sunday, the Wildcats fought hard but couldn't clinch the victory as they fell 4-3 to Air Force. Fought, Chen and Hansel all won their singles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Goswami and Cooper defeated Jack McCullers and Grant Taylor 6-3.
"The match came down to desire," Ferriera said. "Air Force showed us a definite no quit attitude. They out gritted and out hustled us today and deserved to beat us."
The Wildcats are now 1-2 on the season and will next host Missouri-Kansas City, and Nebraska-Omaha next Saturday. The Wildcats will start Big Sky Conference play Feb. 27 against Sacramento State.
"We realize we have things to work on if we want to succed this season," Ferriera said.
