OGDEN – The Wildcats finally pried the lid off the goal.
Behind a brace from senior forward Stacy Bair, and goals from freshman forward Morgan Quarnberg and junior central midfielder Chansi Crompton, the Weber State University women's soccer team rolled to a 4-2 win over Sacramento State on Friday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.
It was the first time since the 2012 season that Weber State (2-3-0 Big Sky, 6-7-1 overall) has scored four goals in a match, and pulled the Wildcats level with the Hornets and Portland State for sixth in the Big Sky Conference standings. The Vikings (2-3-0 Big Sky, 4-9-0 overall) are set to visit Wildcat Soccer Field on Sunday at Noon.
“The girls took the lid off the goal a little today, and it was good to see,” Weber State coach Tim Crompton said.
Weber State came roaring out the gate against Sacramento State (2-3-0 Big Sky, 4-9-0 overall), with freshman midfielder Madison Garlock driving down into the right corner before firing a pass across the goalmouth to Quarnberg for a near-post shot that put the Wildcats in front 1-0 in the third minute of play. The goal was the freshman's fourth of the season
WSU continued to play off the front foot, with Garlock earning her second assist of the match in the 33rd minute when she played the ball out of the corner to Bair, with Bair punching a shot across the goal mouth to the far post to make it 2-0.
It was the first goal of the season for Bair.
She didn't have to wait that long for her second.
Just five minutes from the opening whistle of the second half, Bair punched home her second of the match off a combined assist from redshirt freshman midfielder Celeste Wheelwright and senior forward Mackenzie Harrison that made it 3-0 in the 51st minute.
Sacramento State pulled one back just two minutes later to make it 3-1, but the Weber State offense wasn't finished, with Crompton scoring her third goal of the season in the 65th minute. Quarnberg won the ball down the line and raced toward the goal, but the ball was nudged away by the Hornets' defense. The clearance, however, landed right at Crompton's feet, and she blasted it in from 20-yards out straight on.
The Hornets rounded out the scoring with a 90th minute penalty kick.
Weber State will be back in action on Sunday at Noon when it hosts Portland State. Kickoff is set for Noon at Wildcat Soccer Field.
