OGDEN -- Weber State picked up its first win with a dominating 90-47 victory over the University of Antelope Valley Thursday night at the Dee Events Center.
Antelope Valley, an NAIA school out of Lancaster, Calif., is in its first year of college basketball. The Pioneers jumped out to an early 15-13 lead but Weber State responded to close the first half on a 26-5 run and never looked back.
The Pioneers never were closer than 17 points the rest of the half and the Wildcats extended their lead to as many as 47 before picking up the 45 point win.
“This game was just what we needed,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “We started off a little tight but we loosened up and did some good things. It was great to get some players some experience and playing time in the system and that's just what we needed.”
The Wildcats shot 56 percent from the field and held the Pioneers to 32 percent shooting. Weber State also knocked down 13 3-pointers and outrebounded Antelope Valley 42-25.
Three Wildcats scored in double figures, led by Jeremey Senglin who had 18 points and knocked down three 3-pointers. Joel Bolomboy had a double-double for the third straight game, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds, along with four blocked shots. Richaud Gittens had 14 points off the bench and also hit three 3-pointers.
Weber State also made some personnel changes as Cody John and Juwan Williams both played for the first time this season, instead of sitting the year out as red shirts. Cody John scored eight points and Williams added three.
Freshman McKay Cannon also started the game and had seven points.
The Wildcats now hit the road to compete at the Gulf Coast Showcase Monday-Wednesday in Estero, Fla. Weber State will play three games in the tournament beginning Monday night at 6:30 p.m. MT against Central Michigan.
