PHOENIX – Missed opportunities haunted the Weber State University softball team in a pair of tough losses during the second day of the Grand Canyon Invitational at Stapleton-Pierson Field.
The Wildcats dropped a 6-5 decision to tournament host Grand Canyon in their opening game, and then couldn't rally all the way back from in a 4-2 loss to CSUN in the second contest of the day.
Weber State fell to 4-5 with the losses, and will wrap up the tournament with a final rematch against the Antelopes (7-9) at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Against GCU, Weber State pounded out 13 hits, but stranded nine base-runners, including a tough break in the fifth inning when the Wildcats had the bases loaded with no outs, but were unable to expand on a then 5-2 lead. Weber State also had two on with no outs in the top of the seventh while leading 5-4, but again came up short and the Antelopes scored twice with two outs in the bottom of the inning to claim the win.
Freshman second baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while junior shortstop Aubrey Whitmer, sophomore right fielder Sara Hingsberger, and junior left fielder Rudi Barrios each had a pair of hits.
Against CSUN, the Matadors (11-3) held the Wildcats to just one hit in the first six innings, slowly building a 4-0 lead.
Junior third baseman Alyson Kulp led off the seventh with a single, and then freshman designated player Molly Horne hit her second two-run long ball of the weekend to make it 4-2, but that's as close as the Wildcats were able to come.
