PHOENIX – The Wildcats closed the books on their second weekend of action with another strong offensive outing.
Junior third baseman Alyson Kulp went 2-for-4 with four RBI and sophomore left fielder Katelyn Robinson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored as the Weber State University softball team rolled Grand Canyon 10-6 at Stapleton-Pierson Field on Sunday morning.
It's the fourth time in 10 games this season that the Wildcats (5-5) have scored double-digit runs, with the Purple and White improving to 4-0 in those games.
“The seventh inning was really clutch for us,” Weber State coach Mary Kay Amicone said. “Aly Kulp and Katelyn Robinson, along with Aubrey Whitmer really came through with timely hits.”
The Wildcats scored twice in the first, third, and fourth innings to build up a 6-0 lead, but the Antelopes (7-11) came charging back in the fifth and sixth to get within 6-5 heading into the seventh.
Freshman designated player Molly Horne led off the seventh with a single to center field, with Robinson hitting an RBI double to right center that scored sophomore Mackenzi Corta – running for Horne – from second.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Kulp drilled a two RBI double down the right field line that pushed the lead to 9-5, and Aubrey Whitmer had an RBI single in the next at-bat to give the Wildcats a five-run cushion heading into the bottom of the inning.
Weber State will return to action on Friday in Lakewood, Calif., when it takes on in-state rival Utah Valley at the Louisville Slugger Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State.
