LONG BEACH, Calif. – Riding the arm of their senior pitcher and a strong defensive effort, the Wildcats corralled another shutout win in southern California.
Senior right-hander MaCauley Flint threw a four-hit, five strikeout complete game lockdown on Saturday afternoon, leading the Weber State University softball team to a 3-0 victory over the Seattle Redhawks to start off the second day of the Louisville Slugger Invitational at 49er Softball Complex.
“I feel good with my pitches and how I'm throwing the ball,” Flint said. “It's all about keeping it simple and having confidence in your pitches. It makes it a lot easier that I have the amazing defense that I do behind me.”
Flint scattered four hits with five stikeouts and three walks against 28 batters as she improved to 4-2 in the circle.
After 5½ scoreless innings, Weber State (7-6) finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth after a pair of Seattle errors wrapped around a single from senior center field Malia Campos helped load the bases for a one-out two RBI single by junior shortstop Aubrey Whitmer. Whitmer's hit went off the ankle of Seattle pitcher Mandie Sugita and into the outfield to bring sophomore left fielder Katelyn Robinson and Campos across the plate to make it 2-0.
The Wildcats made it 3-0 when junior third baseman Alyson Kulp scored on a fielding error by the Redhawks shortstop with senior catcher Mylee Brown at the plate.
Weber State will take on tournament host Long Beach State later today at 5:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. Pacific) at Mayfair Park in Lakewood, Calif., and then wrap up the three-day, five-game tournament against Stanford at 11 a.m. (10 a.m. Pacific) on Sunday.
