OREM, Utah – These Wildcats have some fight in them.
The Weber State University softball team twice rallied for victory on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader with in-state rival Utah Valley at Wolverine Field.
The Purple and White improved to 19-10 overall, taking a 6-5 decision in the opening game and a 10-5 win in the second game to wrap up their final tune-up before kicking off the Big Sky Conference season this weekend against North Dakota.
“In today's games, I felt like, as a team, we were really focused in on getting the two wins,” said sophomore right fielder Sara Hingsberger, whose leadoff home run to start the seventh gave the Wildcats the needed margin to capture the first game. “We really played as a team by stringing hits together, capitalizing on errors, and by scoring runs. Whenever Utah Valley scored, we always had an answer right back. I felt like the wins today put us in a great position for the start of conference this weekend.”
Hingsberger finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate, and also reached twice on walks, with a double and a home run. Freshman catcher/designated player Molly Horne was 4-for-8 with three doubles and three RBI, while junior third baseman Alyson Kulp was 4-for-8 with three RBI.
In all, the Wildcats pounded out 19 hits and 16 runs across 14 innings.
“I really liked our fight today,” Weber State coach Mary Kay Amicone said. “We got two great wins. Kirty (freshman right-hander Kirtlyn Bohling) did an outstanding job in the circle for us. We played solid defense and Sara really came up with a clutch home run in the seventh inning.”
Bohling (4-3) pitched a combined 6.2 innings in relief during the two games, allowing just one hit and three walks against six strikeout, as she earned her fourth win of the season in the first game and her second save of the year in the second. Freshman right-hander Bailey Seek (7-2) earned the win in the second game.
With the majority of the non-conference season behind it, Weber State will open Big Sky Conference play against North Dakota on Friday afternoon at Wildcat Softball Field. It will be the Wildcats' 2015 home opener, with first pitch set for 2 p.m., followed by a second game at approximately 4 p.m. The series will conclude on Saturday at Noon with a third meeting between the two.
