BOISE, Idaho – There was no sleeping in this day for the Wildcats.
The Weber State University softball team didn't let an early pre-dawn wake-up call slow them down, jumping to an early lead and overpowering St. Mary's, Calif., 5-1 to open up the SpringHills Suites Invitational at Boise State's Dona Larsen Park.
Senior catcher Mylee Brown, junior third baseman Alyson Kulp, and freshman designated player Molly Horne each went yard in the first four innings, and senior center fielder Malia Campos scored on a passed ball in the first as the Purple and White charged out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back.
Sophomore left fielder Sara Hingsberger also blasted a double as four of the Wildcats' eight hits went for extra bases.
After the Gaels (5-11) got two on with one out in the top of the first, the Wildcats quickly shut down the inning, and Campos burned tracks from third on a two-out passed ball to put Weber State up 1-0 after one.
Kulp led off the third, hitting a low lining blast over the fence at left center to make it 2-0. Junior shortstop Aubrey Whitmer hit a two-out single up the middle, setting the stage for a two-run shot to left field by Horne that doubled the lead yet again to 4-0.
Brown led off the fourth with the Wildcats third long ball of the morning, sending it sailing over at left center to make it 5-0.
St. Mary's briefly threatened in the sixth, pushing one across after stringing together several hits, but the Wildcats turned a thrilling 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning and freshman right-hander Bailey Seek capped her third win of the season by taking the Gaels down in order in the seventh.
Weber State (9-7) will be back in action at 3:15 p.m. today when the Wildcats take on tournament host Boise State. The tournament continues on Saturday with Weber State facing in-state rival Utah State at 10:45 a.m., and then concludes on Sunday with the Wildcats meeting the Aggies and Broncos a second time.
