OGDEN, Utah – A trio of costly errors thwarted the Wildcats' chance for another series sweep.
The Weber State University softball team fell 8-5 to instate rival Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Softball Field, with the Thunderbirds scoring five unearned runs – including three in the top of the seventh to break a 5-5 deadlock.
Junior third baseman Alyson Kulp and freshman designated player/catcher Molly Horne each went 3-for-4, while freshman second baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Weber State, which fell to 9-3 in Big Sky play and 28-14 overall, pounded out 11 hits – and finished the series outhitting Southern Utah (5-7 Big Sky, 13-24 overall) 35-17.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single to left field by Horne that scored Kulp, and then clawed back from a 3-1 deficit in the second on a two-run shot over the fence at left center by junior first baseman Krystin Kubo to make it 3-3, before regaining the lead on sacrifice fly to center field by senior center fielder Malia Campos that scored Brinkerhoff.
Southern Utah tied it up at 4-4 in the fourth and then took a 5-4 lead in the fifth.
Weber State again fought back to tie it up with Kulp delivering a two-out double to left field that scored Brinkerhoff to make it 5-5 heading into the seventh.
Saturday's game was Weber State's annual 'Live Pink, Bleed Purple' game, with the players donning pink-colored uniform tops in support of breast cancer awareness.
With four of the seven weeks of Big Sky Conference play in the books, the Wildcats currently sit in third place, just one game behind league co-leaders Idaho State (10-2 Big Sky) and Sacramento State (10-2 Big Sky) – who play this coming weekend in Sacramento, Calif., while leading fourth-place Northern Colorado by three games. Weber State will face the Bears (6-6 Big Sky) in Greeley, Colo.
Montana (5-7 Big Sky) and Southern Utah are currently tied for fifth in the league standings.
The Wildcats will briefly step out of league play on Tuesday when they travel to face BYU in a televised matchup in Provo, Utah. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., with the game set to be televised throughout the BYUtv Network.
