GREELEY, Colo. – The Wildcats' trip east to Colorado turned out to be quite undesirable.
The Weber State University softball team suffered a heart-breaking loss in a high-scoring 17-15 Big Sky Conference slugfest with Northern Colorado on Saturday morning.
The scheduled three-game league series between the Bears and Wildcats was condensed to a rescheduled doubleheader on Saturday, with just one game being completed before weather halted play during the fourth inning of the second.
Weber State powered out to a 15-7 lead in the top of the sixth inning, before Northern Colorado staged a 10-run rally in the bottom half of the inning to capture the win.
The Wildcats fell to 9-4 in Big Sky play and 28-15 overall, but moved up into second place in the league standings due to Idaho State's three-game sweep of Sacramento State. The final Big Sky Conference standings, which will determine the four teams that advance to the postseason tournament, will be decided by winning percentage.
Saturday's game featured six lead changes, with only four of the 13 half-innings not featuring at least a run. The Wildcats pounded out 16 hits, which tied for the third-most in a single-game in school history behind only two different 17-hit performances.
Freshman catcher Molly Horne had five RBI, while senior designated player Mylee Brown was a perfect 4-for-4 with the plate, and also reached on a walk. Senior centerfielder Malia Campos also recorded three hits and three runs scored.
Weber State will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader against in-state rival Utah State. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. at Wildcat Softball Field.
