OGDEN, Utah – While sunny, blue skies drenched Wildcat Softball Field with a perfect 70 degree day, the Wildcats were busy drenching the school's record book.
The Weber State University softball team swept a doubleheader with in-state rival Utah State on Tuesday afternoon, topping the Aggies 4-3 in the opening game and 7-0 in the second contest.
The Wildcats improved to 30-15 overall, tying the all-time school record for wins in a season. That mark was one of several that fell as the Purple and White's season-long assault on the record book continue.
Senior right-hander MaCauley Flint entered the day needing just two strikeouts to become Weber State's career strikeout leader, and she reached that in the first inning. Flint now has 236 career strikeouts.
Junior third baseman Alyson Kulp had three hit between the two games, setting a new single-season record and becoming the first player in Wildcat history to get 60 hits in a season.
“It was great to be able to get out and work through situations that will make us better down the stretch in conference play,” Weber State coach Mary Kay Amicone said. “I loved our composure in both games today. We strung together hits and pitched really well. (Sophomore right fielder Sara Hingsberger, freshman designated player/catcher Molly Horne, and Aly had very good at-bats today. Kirtlyn Bohling and Bailey Seek combined to throw a really nice game. Our pitching staff had a very good outing.”
Weber State outscored Utah State 11-3 over the 14 innings, outhitting the Aggies 18-6.
Hingsberger finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate with two home runs and four RBI.
The Wildcats got off to a rocky start in the opening game, committing two errors wrapped around a single up the middle, but Flint mowed down the next three batters on her way to the strikeout record.
WSU scored a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead, and them made it 3-1 in the sixth when sophomore left fielder Mackenzi Corta hit an RBI single down the left line that scored junior Jazmine Thompson – who was pinch running after a double by Horne.
The Aggies rallied in the top of the seventh, tying the game at 3-3 and threatening to do more damage with the bases loaded and just one out, but the Wildcats forced a pop up and a ground out to shortstop to limit danger.
Freshman second baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, and then scored on a sacrifice play at first by Kulp to give the Wildcats the walk-off win.
Riding the momentum from the dramatic first game win, Weber State blasted the second game open with a six-run second inning that featured a solo home run from Hingsberger and a three-run shot by senior catcher/designated player Mylee Brown.
Hingsberger added her second home run of the game in the fifth to make it 7-0, and freshman right-hander Kirtlyn Bohling (8-5) nabbed her eighth win in the circle as she no-hit Utah State for six innings before giving way to game one winner Bailey Seek (8-3) in the seventh.
Weber State will return to Big Sky Conference action this weekend when the Wildcats travel to Sacramento, Calif., for a critical three-game series with Sacramento State, beginning on Friday at 1 p.m. MT (Noon PT).
