SACRAMENTO, Calif. – One step at time, the Wildcats continue to close in on a postseason spot.

The Weber State University softball split a Big Sky Conference doubleheader with Sacramento State on Friday afternoon at Shea Stadium, taking yet another step forward in their quest for their first-ever Big Sky Conference tournament berth.

After dropping a nail-biting pitcher's duel 1-0 in the opening game, the Wildcats rebounded with a  9-5 victory over the Hornets, improving to 10-5 in Big Sky Conference play and 31-16 overall. The 31 overall wins is a new program record.

The opening game was a genuine pitcher's duel between senior right-hander MaCauley Flint and Sacramento State ace Caitlin Brooks, with the Hornets edging the Wildcats on a single unearned two-out run in the bottom of the seven after a late error. Flint and Brooks combined for 20 strikeouts and just eight total hits.

Junior third baseman Alyson Kulp went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the second game, extending her season-record for hits to 63, while junior shortstop Aubrey Whitmer tallied three hits on the afternoon to become the second player in WSU history to record 60 hits in a year.

Weber State recorded 14 hits in the second game, with five Wildcats getting at least two hits.

The Purple and White scored three runs in the top of the fourth to break away from 2-2 tie, and then added four more in the top of the sixth top turn a one-run lead into a five-run advantage.

The Wildcats and Hornets will wrap up the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT (12 p.m. PT).
