OGDEN, Utah – The Wildcats paid tribute to eight departing seniors on Saturday afternoon, closing the door on the regular season with one of their most complete games of the year.
The Weber State University softball team turned eight hits and a trio of Montana errors into a 10-0 victory over the Grizzlies in five innings on a picture-perfect Senior Day at Wildcat Softball Field.
Senior right-hander MaCauley Flint earned her 11th win of the year in the circle as the Wildcats wrapped up the Big Sky Conference season with a 13-6 record, improving to 35-17 overall.
“Senior Day was more than I ever could've imagined,” Flint said. “The coaches, the team, the field crew, and the administration really made this a day I will never forget. Winning was just icing on the cake.
“We are still hungry and ready for this coming weekend. We all have a common goal and are excited for the opportunity to hopefully make it a reality.”
Weber State will be the No. 3 seed in next week's Big Sky Conference tournament and will open up the three-day, double-elimination tournament against No. 2 seed Sacramento State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Idaho State's Miller Ranch Stadium in Pocatello, Idaho. Top seed and host Idaho State will open the tournament against fourth-seeded Southern Utah at 1 p.m.
Flint added three more strikeouts to her Weber State career record of 257 in 4.1 innings of work, allowing just four hits on 70 pitches as she pushed her new-era record for wins in the circle to 21. Senior right-hander Morgan Allaband shared the Wildcats' 11th shutout of the season, closing out the final inning of the game.
Flint and Allaband, joined fellow seniors Malia Campos, Cydnee Clarke, Janel Cunningham, Mylee Brown, Kylee Hogue, and Stephanie Mathias in playing their final career game at Wildcat Softball Field.
While the focus of Saturday's game was on the Wildcats' eight seniors, it was a freshman that guaranteed their day would be a special one.
Designated player Molly Horne went 2-for-3 at the plate with five RBI, including a two RBI single to left field in the third inning and a three-run shot over the left field fence in the fourth.
In all, seven Wildcats recorded hits on Saturday as Weber State completed the three-game sweep of the Grizzlies, allowing just one unearned run in 19 inning of work.
