FRESNO, Calif. – The Wildcats finally got back on the diamond.
After enduring four consecutive games cancelled due to rain, the Weber State University softball team earned a split during day two action at the Fresno State Classic on Saturday.
The Wildcats rallied for a wild 5-4 walk-off win over Cal State Bakersfield to start the day, before falling 2-0 to No. 24 Fresno State at Margie Wright Diamond.
In the day's opening game, the Wildcats fell behind 4-2 the top of the seventh, but tied things up on a two-run blast to left field from senior first baseman Krystin Kubo with one out.
Junior KyRae Kogianes pinch hit in the next at-bat, drawing a walk, before junior Mackenzi Corta replaced her, and sophomore third baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff drilled an RBI double to left field that brought Corta across home for the winning run.
Corta scored in the second inning on an error by the Roadrunners' first baseman to make it 1-0 and the Wildcats held a 2-1 lead after senior third baseman Alyson Kulp's sacrifice fly to center field scored freshman outfielder JaeCie Wilson.
Sophomore right-hander Kirtlyn Bohling picked her sixth complete game of the season, striking out five and scattering five hits without a walk, to improve to 7-2 in the circle.
Against the nationally-ranked Bulldogs in the second half, the Wildcats held No. 24 Fresno State to just a single hit and one earned run, but stranded seven base runners in falling 2-0.
Kubo had two doubles and Wilson recorded two singles for the Wildcats who had seven hits in the game.
Weber State moved to 12-8 overall, and will face San Diego State and No. 8 Washington on Sunday at 10 a.m. MT (9 a.m. Pacific) and 12:30 p.m. to wrap up the tournament. The Huskies are the third-highest ranked team Weber State has played, and will be the third nationally-ranked team the Wildcats have played this season.
