SALT LAKE CITY – The Wildcats put up a fight, but came up just a few plays short in the end.
Despite a pair of hits from sophomore second baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff, the Weber State University softball team fell 4-0 to in-state rival Utah in non-conference action on Tuesday at Dumke Softball Stadium.
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 25-13, and ended the Purple and White's school-record winning streak at nine games.
Weber State had a prime chance to cut into the Utes' lead in the third, loading up the bases with only one out, but Utah escaped the inning after a called third strike and a foul out to left field.
Senior first baseman Krystin Kubo and Brinkerhoff singled to lead off the fifth, and freshman center fielder JaeCie Wilson laid down a perfectly-placed bunt single to load up the bases a second time with only one out, but Utah turned a double play to end the inning, and extended their lead by one run in each of the next two innings.
Weber State will return to Big Sky Conference action this weekend for a crucial three-game series with defending regular season champion Idaho State, beginning on Friday at 2 p.m. The Bengals are 18-17 overall (5-2 Big Sky) and have won six straight games, including a 5-3 victory over Utah Valley on Tuesday in Orem, Utah.
