CEDAR CITY – It was a day for the ages for the Wildcats.
Junior outfielder Sara Hingsberger pounded out four home runs, including a pair of grand slams, as the Weber State University softball team clobbered in-state rival Southern Utah 18-1 and 9-1, both on five-inning run rule, to sweep a Big Sky Conference doubleheader on Friday at Kathryn Berg Field.
Hingsberger, who had hit four home runs in the Wildcats first 35 games of the season, hit an inside-the-park grand slam and a three-run blast over the wall at center field in the opening game, tying the Big Sky Conference single-game RBI record with seven. The Eagle, Idaho, native wasn't done after first game though as she hit a second grand slam – this one over the fence at left center – and then a two-run shot in the second game as she recorded six RBI in the second game, which would have tied the previous single-game school record for RBIs. She finished the day with four home runs and 13 RBI in just six at-bats in 10 innings.
Weber State improved to 7-1 in Big Sky Conference play and moved to 25-12 overall, running their now school-record winning streak to nine straight games.
In the opening game, the Wildcats pounded out a single-game school record 18 hits, and recorded the most runs in a regulation game in school history, with 13 of those coming in the 47-minute top half of the second inning. Seven players recorded multiple hits, with senior third baseman Alyson Kulp and junior designated player KyRae Kogianes each recording three.
Sophomore right-hander Kirtlyn Bohling improved to 15-3 in the circle, lowering her Big Sky-best ERA to 2.20, and recorded seven strikeouts against three hits and two walks.
In the second game, the Wildcats squeezed a run across in the second inning and then blew it open in the third with Hingsberger's grand slam to left center that put Weber State up 6-0. Senior shortstop Aubrey Whitmer, who was 4-for-5 for the day joined Hingsberger with multiple hits in the second game.
Junior right-hander Baylee Reeves earned the win in the second contest, improving to 5-4, with just two hits and a walk allowed against two strikeouts.
Weber State and Southern Utah will wrap up their three-game series at Noon on Saturday.
