Weber State drops season opener to BYU

PROVO, Utah - Weber State men's tennis fell to BYU 6-1 in the 2017 season opener Saturday afternoon.
"I was very happy with our performance today," said Director of Tennis, Brad Ferreira. "We still need some work on our doubles and we need to get the freshman used to the level of compeition at the collegiate level. I'm very encouraged for another great season."
BYU started the match off claiming victories in the No. 3 and No. 2 doubles spots giving the Cougars the doubles point advantage going into singles play.
All of the singles matches were well fought matches. In the No. 1 spot, Shao-Po (Jack) Yin played one of the top ranked players in the nation. Yin's match went into the full three sets, Yin was at match point in the first set and fell 5-7. He then came back and won the second set 6-4 forcing the match into the full three sets. He had match point in the third set and couldn't quite clinch a victory and fell in the final set 7-6.
Stefan Cooper picked up the lone Wildcat point in the No. 2 spot. Cooper played smart tennis and was able to take down John Pearce with scores of 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.
The rest of the Wildcats showed impressive efforts for the first match of the season.
Weber State is now 0-1 on the season and will next take on the University of Utah Jan. 21 in Salt Lake City. The first home match of the seaosn will be Jan. 27 against Arizona Christian. Weber State will then travel to Las Vegas for the UNLV invite.
