NAMPA, Idaho – The Wildcats are coming home with their second straight winning weekend.
Freshman right fielder Takesha Saltern hit a two-out, two-run double to the fence as the Weber State University softball team rallied for a dramatic 6-5 win over Boise State in the finale of the SpringHill Suites Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Northwest Nazarene University's Halle Field.
It was the second straight day featuring a dramatic late win by the Wildcats, who finished the five-game, three-day tournament with a 3-2 record and improved to 8-10-1 overall. Since beginning the season 0-7-1 against top-flight competition, Weber State is 8-3 in its last 11 games as the Wildcats gear up for their final two non-conference weekends, beginning on Friday in Riverside, Calif.
Weber State took a 1-0 lead the first inning on an RBI single from Rae Gall, but the Broncos took advantage of a rare double error to plate two runners and take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.
The Wildcats came right back in the top of the fourth, tying things up at 2-2 on a fielder's choice RBI by freshman outfielder Landi Hawker. An RBI double to center field by senior first baseman Sara Hingsberger turned the tables again as the Wildcats took a 4-2 lead.
Boise State (12-5) rallied in the bottom half of the inning to regain the 5-4 lead, and successfully kept the Wildcats at bay in the fifth and sixth.
Back-to-back one-out singles from senior third baseman KyRae Kogianes and junior second baseman McKinley Brinkerhoff put the needed runners on base and set the stage for Saltern's heroics as her low-lining hit sailed just over the glove of the Bronco's left fielder, to plate Brinkerhoff and freshman shortstop Sydney White and give the Wildcats the 6-5 lead.
Weber State will be back in action at the Highlander Classic, hosted by UC Riverside, next weekend in Riverside, Calif.
