OGDEN – The Wildcats caught a break.

It would be the only one they needed.

Freshman right-fielder Takesha Saltern scored on a two-out error in the bottom of the third, and junior right-hander Kirtlyn Bohling threw a complete-game shutout as the Weber State University softball team defeated Southern Utah 1-0 to advance in the Big Sky Conference Softball Championship on Thursday afternoon at Wildcat Softball Complex.

Weber State (32-17-1) will face Montana (33-22) at 2:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to Saturday's Big Sky Conference championship game.

Saltern, who earlier Thursday was named to the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year's top 10 finalist list, was 3-for-4 with a stolen base against the Thunderbirds. Saltern led off the third with a single, and zipped home from third base on an error by Southern Utah's shortstop for the game's only run.

Bohling, who won her career high-tying 19th game of the year, allowed just three hits and struck out two for her sixth complete-game shutout of the season.

Thursday's win was Weber State's sixth straight over Southern Utah, who will meet Sacramento State at 9:30 a.m. on Friday to kick off the second day of the Big Sky tournament. Idaho State and North Dakota will meet at Noon, with the winners of the two morning games set to meet at 5 p.m. to decide who will advance to the final day of the tournament.
