Drake edges Wildcats for OT win

LAS VEGAS – The Wildcats turned in their best match of the young season, but came up just short in their quest for their first victory.
Drake's Annie Schmitz scored from 15 yards out in the 96th minute as the Bulldogs edged the Weber State University women's soccer team 1-0 in overtime at UNLV's Johann Field.
It was a tough finish for the second straight match as the Wildcats came up one goal short despite outshooting their opponent.
Weber State (0-2-0) unleashed 12 shots on Drake, and held an edge in both possession and chance creation, but the break through goal once again proved elusive.
The Wildcats were at their best in the opening half as they outshot Drake 5-3, with the second half become more of a back-and-forth affair.
Weber State had two solid opportunities at the start of the golden goal overtime period, but it was Drake that ultimately capitalized after a set piece in the middle third resulted in Schmitz getting open just inside the box.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Friday in their 2017 home opener, taking on North Dakota State at 7 p.m. under the lights at Wildcat Soccer Field. Ticket information is available at WeberStateSports.com.
