Wildcats hold off Vikings for 84-79 win

OGDEN - Six players scored in double figures as Weber State picked up an 84-79 win over Portland State Saturday night at the Dee Events Center.
There were 12 lead changes in the first half before Weber state stretched its lead to 12 points with 5:49 to play in the half. The Vikings closed the first half on a 10-2 run to cut the Weber State lead to 36-33 at the break.
The Wildcats never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 12 with 10:13 to play. But the Vikings would not give up and cut the lead to two points at 81-79 with less than a minute to play. WSU made three free throws and held off PSU on defense to secure the win.
Weber State moves to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in Big Sky Conference play.
WSU shot 41 percent and held the Vikings to 37 percent shooting. Weber State was 11 of 23 from 3-point range, compared to 4 of 18 shooting by Portland State. The Vikings outrebounded Weber State 48-38 but the Wildcats had 17 assists and six blocks and just 13 turnovers against the PSU press, the second fewest Portland State has forced this season.
Six Wildcats scored in double figures with freshman Ricky "Doc" Nelson scoring a career-high 17 points. He was 5 of 6 from the field, including 2 of 2 from 3-point range. Senior Ryan Richardson also added 17 points as he scored in double figures for the 11th straight game.
Jerrick Harding added 14 points with Michal Kozak scoring 11 points. Brekkott Chapman had 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his second-straight double-double, and Zach Braxton added 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The Wildcats will now face seven of their final 11 Big Sky games on the road beginning Saturday, Jan. 27 at Idaho State.
