OGDEN - The great day at Weber State continued. After the Wildcat football team won its second round playoff game, the Weber State men's basketball won a shootout over BYU, beating the Cougars 113-103 at the Dee Events Center.
The Wildcats had six players in double figures and won their first game against BYU since January 2003, snapping a 15-game losing streak.
There were eight ties and 15 lead changes in the first half as the Wildcats held a 47-46 halftime lead. But Weber State never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 15 points in the half. The 'Cats made 17 free throws in the second half, including 12 free throws in the final 1:31 to seal the win.
BYU shot 59 percent from the field but was just 5 of 14 from 3-point range. The Wildcats shot 53 percent and were 11 of 25 from 3-point land. WSU outrebounded the Cougars 37-35 and had 16 assists.
Jerrick Harding led all Wildcats with 30 points on 11 of 17 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Cody John added 22 points and eight rebounds. Michal Kozak had a season-high 14 points off the bench, while Brekkott Chapman added 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Zach Braxton had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The 103 points scored their most points ever against an in-state team. It was also the most points for the Wildcats against a Division I team since January 2000 at Cal State Northridge.
The Wildcats improve to 5-2 on the season. WSU will face two Mountain West Conference teams this week, playing at Fresno State on Wednesday and taking on Utah State on Saturday in the Beehive Classic in Salt Lake City.
