Weber State softball split a doubleheader in the opening day of the Red Desert classic. First the Wildcats fell to Nevada 7-5 and then later defeated Utah Valley 12-4 in five innings.
No one from either team scored in the first inning. WSU's defensive efforts were led by Kirtlyn Bohling who had back-to-back strikeouts.
In the top of the second inning, Nevada was able to get two across for a two point jump on the Wildcats. However, in the bottom of the second Weber State's rally power came through. Molly Horne was hit by a pitch to start things off with a runner on base for WSU. Ashlyn Visser stepped up to the plate and jacked one over left field scoring two runs and tying everything up.
The Wolf Pack scored three more runs over the course of the next three innings and WSU couldn't pick up the slack until the bottom of six. At that point WSU was down 5-2 and big moves needed to happen to get WSU back on track in the final innings of play.
Visser got on base with a walk to start things off for WSU. Rae Gall came in to pinch hit and hit a double to center field that scored Visser. WSU only trailed 5-3 going into the final inning.
Nevada hit the ball well in the top of seven. The Wolf Pack hot bats were able to score two giving them a 7-3 lead.
WSU was in the mood for a rally and started the bottom of seven with Ali Belloc drawing a base on balls. WSU was able to advance the runner to third and with a single by Landi Hawker. With runners on the corner, Jordan Lockhart came up with a single up the middle WSU was able to drive two runs across.
WSU was looking solid but couldn't come up with extra runs to keep the game alive and fell 7-5 to Nevada.
In the second game against Utah Valley, Weber State jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead in the first inning. Hawker started things off with a single to right field and McKinley Brinkerhoff followed that up with a single to left field. Horne stepped up and rocked a double down the left field line scoring the two runners.
WSU was on fire in the third inning. The Wildcats got two quick outs with the first two batters. The next two Weber State batters got on base with walks. Visser was up with runners on first and second and hit a single through the right side scoring one.
Gall followed in suit getting on by fielder's choice and Wolverine errors allowed one more to cross the plate.
Then, Sadie Blacker doubled down the right field line and scored one more. With runners on the corners Belloc came up and knocked one out of the park for three RBIs to end the inning. WSU scored six runs on two outs.
In the top of five, Blacker started the inning off with a single, followed by a single by Belloc and a walk by Saltern. Bases were loaded and Juliana Tricarico came in to pinch hit and singled to third base scoring one run. ,
Bases still loaded and Brinkerhoff flied out to right but that still brought in a run. More UVU errors gave WSU scoring opportunities that were capitalized on. By the middle of the fifth inning, Weber State had a 12-1 lead.
UVU was home team and was able to rally and get three across the plate in the bottom of five but it wasn't enough and Weber State claimed the game 12-4 in five innings.
Tatiana Su'eus'ue stepped in the circle for the first time this season and pitched the full five innings, gave up just four runs and nine hits and struck out six different batters. Su'eusu'e was credited with the win putting her at a 1-0 record on the season.
Weber State is now 7-10 overall on the season and will take on Seattle tomorrow in the second day of the Red Desert.
