Wildcat women take third; men sixth at Big Sky Outdoor meet

MOSCOW, Idaho - The Weber State women's team finished third and the men took sixth at the 2018 Big Sky Outdoor Track Championships. The Wildcat women's team scored 88.5 points with the men's team scoring 63 points, and both teams captured two individual titles.



WOMEN

The Wildcat women's team won two events and had five athletes earn All-Conference honors by placing in the top three in their event.

Junior Abbi Brecht won the conference title in the high jump Thursday, posting a mark of 5-08. It is her first conference title and the fourth Wildcat in to ever win the women's high jump title in outdoor track. WSU's Lindsey Johnson won the title in indoor track this year.

Eden Richards also earned All-Big Sky honors in the high jump, posting a mark of 5-05.75 to finish in a tie for third.

Freshman Cidnee Davies claimed gold in the long jump with a career best mark of 19-09.75. That mark ranks as the third best in Weber State history. She is the first Weber State women's athlete to ever win the conference outdoor title in the long jump.

Davies came back Friday and finished second in the 100 meter hurdles, posting a career-best time of 13.84. That time is the fifth-fastest time in school history.

The Wildcats scored 15 points in the 100 meter hurdles. Kate Sorensen finished fourth in the event with a career-best time of 13.99, which is tied for the eighth best in WSU history. Starlee Woodbury finished seventh in the event at 14.28.

Sorensen followed up by earning All-Big Sky honors in the 400 meter hurdles, posting a time of 59.21, to finish second overall.  

In the steeplechase, Summer Harper finished fourth overall with a time of 10:39.33 with Candace Sharp taking seventh at 10:46.24.

Whitney Fowers was fourth in the javelin with a mark of 147-04.

Sophie Merritt was fifth in the discus with a mark of 148-02. That mark ranks as the eighth best in WSU school history. She followed that up on Friday by finishing fifth in the shot put with a mark of 47-06.25. That mark is the sixth best in school history.  

Brinn Jensen finished fifth in the 400 meters at 55.49. Emily Morgan came in sixth in the 100 meters at 12.03 and Michaella Hintze was sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.61.

Kim Carlson took seventh in the 1,500 meters at 4:36.29 with MarLee Mitchell finishing in eighth.

Terrell Womack came in eighth in the hammer throw at 166-10 and Rebecca Wenz was eighth in the javelin.

WSU was sixth in the 400 meter relay and seventh in the 1600 meter relay.


MEN

On the men's side, the Wildcats totaled 63 points and won two titles, with three athletes earning All-Big Sky honors.

Jordan Cross won the title in the steeplechase with a time of 9:01.49 for his first career Big Sky title. Dallin Leatham came in fifth at 9:21.95.

Trey Deveraux won the conference title in the pole vault, posting a mark of 16-01.25. That mark is the sixth best mark in school history. He is also the first Wildcat to win the outdoor title in the pole vault in 50 years, since Monte Vernon won in 1968.

On Friday, Justin Herbert claimed All-Big Sky honors by finishing second in the hammer throw with a mark of 193-01.

Anthony Gregory was fourth in the high jump with a jump of 6-09.75. Joey Czellecz claimed fourth place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.06.

Keaton Pace came in fifth in the pole vault at 15-05.50 and then finished seventh in the javelin at 185-05. Nick Benham finished sixth in the shot put to pick up three points for the Wildcats with a mark of 54-08.50.  

Colton Rimann finished sixth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:14.15 and Daunte Atkinson was sixth in the 200 meters at 21.62.

Jordan Cross came in eighth in the 5,000 meters and the Wildcats were sixth in the 1600 meter relay and seventh in the 400 relay.

Those athletes who qualify will next compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds May 24-26 in Sacramento, California.
