Five Wildcats qualify for NCAA West Preliminary Meet

Five Weber State track and field athletes will continue their season at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, looking to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The five Wildcats, Abbi Brecht, Jordan Cross, Anthony Gregory, Summer Harper and Kate Sorensen all qualified for the West meet, which will be hosted by Sacramento State May 24-26. Two of the five Wildcats won Big Sky titles at last week's conference meet.Â
The NCAA West meet includes those athletes in the top 48 in their events in the western United States. The top 12 from each event at the meet, will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon.Â
Abbi Brecht, a junior from Herriman, Utah, is the top ranked Wildcat heading into the meet. She enters the meet ranked 28th in the west in the high jump. Brecht won the Big Sky title in the high jump last weekend in Moscow, Idaho. Earlier this season she posted a career best jump of 5-9.75. That mark is the best in the Big Sky this season and is also the sixth best in Weber State history.Â
Senior Jordan Cross is ranked 38th in the west region in the men's steeplechase. Cross posted a career best time of 8:56.08 in April at the BYU Robison Invitational. That time is the best in the Big Sky this season. Cross won the conference title in the steeplechase at the Big Sky meet last week at 9:01.49.Â
Anthony Gregory, a senior from Roy, Utah, will compete in the men's high jump. Gregory is ranked 33rd in the NCAA West region heading into the meet. He posted a seasonal best jump of 6-11 at the Bryan Clay Invitational. He also finished fourth at the Big Sky meet.
Junior Summer Harper will run in the women's steeplechase. The Orem, Utah native is ranked 47th in the event after posting a seasonal best time of 10:32.40 at the Bryan Clay Invitational, which is fifth best in the Big Sky this season. Harper finished fourth at the conference meet last weekend.Â
Kate Sorensen, a freshman from Gunnison, Utah, will be entered in the 400 meter hurdles at the West meet. Earlier this season Sorensen set a new Weber State school record in the event, posting a time of 58.92. That time ranks as the third best in the Big Sky this season and is the 32nd best in the West region. She finished second in the event at the Big Sky Championships with a time of 59.21.Â
