Wildcat track and field heads to Big Sky Championships

It's Championship time for the Weber State track and field teams. The Wildcat men's and women's teams will head to the Big Sky Championships this week in Moscow, Idaho. 

The 2018 Big Sky Outdoor Championships will be May 8-11 in Moscow, hosted by the University of Idaho. The multi-events will be held Tuesday and Wednesday with the other events Thursday and Friday. There will be finals in 12 events on Thursday with preliminaries in the other events, with finals in 28 events on Friday. 

The action will also be carried live on Pluto TV and WatchBigSky.com. 

Both teams will send 27 athletes to compete at the conference meet. 

On the women's side, head coach Paul Pilkington's Wildcats have 12 spots in the top five in the conference in nine different events, heading into the conference meet. Weber State junior Abbi Brecht is first in the conference in the high jump and the Wildcats and three of the top four marks in that event. Brecht has a seasonal best jump of 5-09.75, and Lindsey Johnson, the indoor high jump champion, and Eden Richards, are both third at 5-07.75. 

WSU freshman Starlee Woodbury ranks second in the conference in two events. She is second in the 100 meter hurdles at 13.79 and in the long jump at 19-10.25. Freshman Kate Sorensen is third in the Big Sky in the 400 meter hurdles after setting a WSU school record in the events at 58.92 earlier this season. Sorensen is also fourth in the 100 meter hurdles at 14.07. 

Senior Michaella Hintze ranks fourth in the 800 meters at 2:08.77 and Sophie Merritt is fourth in the shot put with a mark of 46-07.50. Summer Harper is fifth in the steeplechase at 10:32.40, and Weber State is fifth in the both relay events, heading into the conference meet. 

The Wildcat men's team, coached by Corbin Talley, has 11 spots in the top five in the Big Sky in nine events. Senior Jordan Cross has the top time in the Big Sky in the steeplechase at 8:56.08, with Dallin Leatham right behind in second place at 9:00.38. 

Anthony Gregory has the top mark in the Big Sky in the high jump at 6-11. Gregory has won two Big Sky titles in his career and has placed in the top three in all seven conference meets. 

WSU has the second and third best marks in the pole vault. Trey Deveraux is second at 16-00.75 and Keaton Pace is third at 15-07. Justin Herbert is second in the hammer throw at 195-01 and Nick Benham is fourth in the shot put at 55-05.75. 

Joey Czellecz has the third-fastest time in the conference in the 400 meter hurdles at 53.54. Brandon Yardley is fifth in the 800 meters (1:51.45) and Daunte Atkinson is fifth in the 200 meters (21.55). 

Weber State also ranks fourth in the 4x400 meter relay. 

Following the conference meet, those athletes that qualify will compete at the NCAA West 1st Round Championships, May  24-26 in Sacramento, looking to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
