Wildcats beat Bears 45-28 in Big Sky opener

OGDEN - Seventh-ranked Weber State opened Big Sky Conference play with a 45-28 win over Northern Colorado Saturday night at Stewart Stadium. The win is the third-straight for the Wildcats who move to 3-1 on the season heading into a bye week.Â
Weber State has been focusing on all three aspects of the game, offense, defense and special teams, and the Wildcats used all three areas in Saturday's win.Â
On offense the Wildcats totaled a season-high 410 yards of offense with 224 yards rushing and 186 yards passing. The scoring started early with 14 points in the first quarter. After UNC opened with a touchdown, Weber State scored when Jake Constantine found Rashid Shaheed for a 46-yard touchdown to make it 7-7 with 9:48 left in the first quarter. Then Josh Davis took over. The freshman broke loose for a 95-yard touchdown run with 5:53 left in the first quarter that gave the Wildcats a 14-7 lead. The 95-yard run is the third longest in Weber State history.Â
Kaden Jenks hit Darryl Denby for an 18-yard touchdown early in the second quarter that put the Wildcats up 21-7. UNC scored two touchdowns in the second quarter to tie the game at 21-21.Â
Special teams came through to start the second half as Weber State sophomore Rashid Shaheed took the opening kickoff of the half and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown. It was his second career 100 yard kickoff return.Â
Davis then added a two-yard touchdown run with 11:57 left in the third quarter that put the Wildcats up 35-21. The Wildcats led 35-28 late in the game but a Trey Tuttle field goal, then a late touchdown from Constantine to Junior Latu, sealed the win for the Wildcats.Â
Davis finished the game with 30 carries for a career-high 218 yards rushing with two touchdowns. He has 80 carries for 499 yards and four touchdowns in three games played this season. Constantine finished 15 of 23 passing for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Â
Defensively, Weber State held Northern Colorado to 372 yards, but allowed just 97 yards in the second half. UNC rushed for 110 yards and threw for 262 yards. The 'Cats also had two interceptions and forced one fumble, to go along with four sacks.Â
LeGrand Toia led the way with 10 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Keilan Benjamin and Jeremy Maxwell each had interceptions.Â
Weber State gets a week off before returning to action on Oct. 6 at Northern Arizona.
