Wildcats beat SUU 29-14 for Homecoming

Weber State improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Big Sky play and the 'Cats snapped a four-game home losing streak to Southern Utah who fell to 1-6 on the season.Â

The Wildcat defense recorded a season-high four interceptions with Brody Burke, B.J. Taufalele, Marque Collins and Eddie Heckard each intercepting SUU passes. WSU is now one of the top teams in the country in turnover margin at +10.Â

SUU totaled 374 yards, compared to 335 for Weber State. The Wildcats rushed for 198 yards and passes for 137, while the Thunderbirds threw for 305 yards and rushed for 69.Â

Weber State started the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown run by Rashid Shaheed early in the second quarter. Jenks hit David Ames for a six-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter to make it 14-7 Wildcats. Early in the fourth quarter, Adam Rodriguez lined up in the Wildcat formation and scored on a three-yard touchdown to make it 20-7.Â

After another interception, the Wildcats scored less than five minutes later with Kris Jackson scoring on a one-yard TD to make the score 26-7.Â

The Thunderbirds scored on a 30-yard touchdown with 7:34 to play but after another interception, the 'Cats converted on a 42-yard field goal with 3:16 to play.

On offense, the Wildcats had eight different players run the ball with Kevin Smith Jr. leading the way with 16 carries for 108 yards. Josh Davis had 10 carries for 49 yards.Â

Kaden Jenks finished 13 of 22 passing for 137 yards and one touchdown and David Ames had four catches for 24 yards and one touchdown.  Â

Defensively, Heckard had nine tackles with one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble, in addition to the interception. Preston Smith also had nine tackles and the 'Cats had three sacks with Jonah Williams recording two and one by George Tarlas.

Weber State has now won 12 of the last 13 games at Stewart Stadium. The Wildcats are right back home next Saturday, hosting Northern Arizona at 2 p.m.
