Wildcats fall to Hawaii and UNLV in double header

OGDEN - The Weber State University men's tennis team faced a double header in the opening day of the UNLV tournament. WSU had a tight match that came down to the No.3 court against the University of Hawaii but fell 3-4. In the afternoon the 'Cats fell 1-4 against UNLV.

"We are not quite to the point where everyone is giving 100%," Director of Tennis Brad Ferreira said. "We had a good close match against Hawaii but all in all we showed very strong effort as a team."

In doubles, Weber State started things off with Kris van Wyk and Michiel Van Schoor who defeated Blaz Seric and Asad Siyyid in the No.1 spot 6-3. After that, Bo-Han Li and Cezary Walkusz fell 6-2 in the No.2 spot the doubles point came down to the No.3 match. Nick Werner and Paul Ohde secured the point by defeating Chia-Hua lu and Simon Telo Alves 6-3.

In singles action against Hawaii, van Wyk dominated his match in the No.1 spot against Seric 6-1,6-1. This is his first singles win of the season.

Ohde gave WSU it's final team point as he defeated Siyyid in a lengthy match but came out victorious 3-6, 6-4,6-1. Ohde is now 2-2 on the season.

Van Schoor battled tough against Lucas Labrunie in the No.3 spot. After losing the first set he rallied and they were tied 1-1. Ultimately he fell in the last set, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6. With Hawaii clinching the final singles point, Hawaii won 4-3 over WSU.

Against UNLV, in the doubles competition, van Wyk and Van Schoor defeated Clayton Alenik and Eric Samuelsson 6-1. Despite the No.1's strong performance, UNLV claimed the doubles point by picking up wins in the No.2 and No.3 spots.

Weber State's lone point came from the No.6 spot with sophomore Li defeating Zach Garner in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

UNLV picked up wins in the No.2 and No.3, and No.1 spots before the match was called.  

van Wyk's match against Olle Thestrup was tied 1-1 before it was retired after UNLV ultimately claimed the team match win. 

Paul Ohde and Nick Werner were down against UNLV when their matches were called.

Weber State is now 0-6 on the season. They will continue tournament play against New Mexico State Saturday Feb. 2. WSU will return home and take on Colorado Mesa Saturday Feb. 9 at noon.
