Weber State wins against UTEP on first day of UNLV tournament

OGDEN - The Weber State University's women's tennis team defeated UTEP on the first day of the UNLV tournament. The 'Cats took an early lead by capturing the doubles point and carried that momentum with them to win 5-2.

"This was another great team performance and the ladies competed very well," head coach Mark Roberts said. "Doubles was close and we found a way to win. We look forward to a fun doubleheader tomorrow."

Weber State started the day by capturing the doubles advantage point. UTEP took the first match, but WSU came back by winning in the No.2 and 3 spots. The first win of the day came from a dominating performance from freshman duo
Megan Lombardi and Cali Fuller who topped Ereksen and Martinez 6-1. Playing in the No.2 spot was Sara Parker and Pei-Hsuan Kuo who rolled past Valdez and Van Oxen 6-4.    

In singles play, Lloyd in the No.6 spot struck first with her 6-4, 7-5 win over Juliana Honczaruk.

Lombardi has remained unbeaten in singles this season as she defeated Nozaki in a lengthy match. After the second set they were tied. In the third set, the match was decided and Lombardi won the tiebreaker to finish 6-3, 6-7, 2-2 (10).

Morgan Dickason won her first match of the season as she defeated Perzerona in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.

Yuuna Ukita battled tough against Valdez and came out with the win 6-3, 6-2. Ukita is now 3-3 on the season in singles play.

Weber State is now 4-2 on the season. Weber will stay in Las Vegas with a doubleheader against Youngstown State and UNLV.
