Women's tennis splits final day at UNLV Tournament

OGDEN, Utah -Weber State University's women's tennis team finished out the UNLV tournament splitting the day, WSU defeated Youngstown State 4-3 in the morning and fell to UNLV 0-4 later in the afternoon.
"This was a good week of tennis and I am very proud of the ladies effort, attitude and overall chemistry of the team," head coach Mark Roberts said. "This was a lot of tennis in a short amount of tennis and the ladies did very well, winning three out of four matches. I can't wait to get back to practice next week and to continue watching this team grow. We have a great group of leaders and they are all striving to be better everyday."
Youngstown State started the morning by capturing a close doubles advantage point against Weber. State took the win on the No.1 court, but WSU came back with the win in the No.2 spot. Sara Parker and Pei-Husan Kuo defeated Lucia Zagar and Elvira Esteo 6-4. With the doubles point on the line freshman duo Megan Lombardi and Cali Fuller had a tough battle against Claudia Barboza and Cassadra Moraleja. In the tiebreaker State came out on top to capture the match and doubles point, 6-7(5).
In singles play, WSU picked up four out of the six matches.
Lombardi proved victorious again when she defeated Esteo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Â After the second set they were tied. In the third set the match was decided and Lombardi won the tiebreaker to finish 6-3, 6-7, 2-2 (10).
McKenna Lloyd had a lengthy match against Barboza , Lloyd took the first set in dominating fashion. Zagar rallied in the second set and carried her momentum to capture the third set to claim the match, 6-2, 2-6, 1-6.
Yuuna Ukita went into a third set against Lisa Khamassi. Khamassi took the first set but after that it was all Ukita as she took the second and third set to win the match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Fuller came from behind and rallied to defeat Moraleja in three sets. After dropping the first set she came back to win the second and third sets. 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Morgan Dickason found herself in the deciding singles match to claim the team victory. The match started with an intense tiebreaker where Esteo edged Dickason. After being down one set Dickason came back to capture the second and third sets to secure her match and the team win.
Against UNLV, the Rebels came out by securing the doubles point as they won matches on the No.1 and No. 3 courts. Â Parker and Kuo had a tight match in the No.2 spot before the match was called, 4-5.
UNLV captured wins in the 4,3 and 1 spots before the match was clinched. In singles Lombardi was up against Connie Li before her match was called, 6-3, 5-2, unfinished.
WSU is now 5-3 on the season. They will return to Ogden for a five game home stretch beginning on Saturday Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.
