Weber State falls to Utah State in home opener

OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State softball team fell 9-0 in five innings to Utah State in the home opener Wednesday afternoon.

How it Happened: Utah State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, that all started with a double by the lead off batter. Weber State was able to get out of the inning as Tatiana Su'esu'e executed a 1-3 putout.

The Wildcats were able to put one runner in scoring position in the bottom of the first, but Utah State's Delaney Hull came up with three strikeouts to send the Wildcats back out on the field for more defense.  

Utah State continued to dominate the offensive side of the ball putting up two runs in the top of the third thanks to a two run shot over the fence by Bailee Trapp.

Weber State found themselves in a sticky situation in the top of the fourth inning as bases loaded up on two separate occasions. WSU was finally able to get out of it thanks to a strikeout by Kate Donaldson.  Utah State did some damage as they put up three runs in the inning.

Going into the bottom of the fourth Weber State trailed 7-0. To end the game in five innings, the Aggies hit another two run homer to take a 9-0 lead. The Wildcats couldn't find any momentum to answer offensively and WSU fell 9-0.  

At the Plate: The 'Cats finished with two hits. Takesha Saltern went 1-2 with a single to start the game off.  McKell McCuistion was the only other Wildcat to get a hit on the day when she came in to pinch hit in the bottom of the fifth. Weber State had sis strikeouts, left four runners on base throughout the game and drew two walks.

In the Circle: Su'esu'e (4-8) started the game in the circle for WSU and gave up four hits, four runs and two walks but also came away with five strikeouts all in the 15 batters she faced. She ended the game with a game ERA of 5.28.

Donaldson finished out the game in the circle for WSU and came away  with one strikeout but gave up five hits and five runs.

Up Next: Weber State will hit the road to Greeley, CO to take on Northern Colorado in the Big Sky opener.
