Huge Rally Falls Just Short for Wildcats at Big Sky Championships

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Weber State men's golf team made a furious rally in the final round of the Big Sky Conference Championships on Sunday, but the effort fell just short as the Wildcats finished second in the team standings at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Weber State recorded 20 birdies and a pair of eagles on the day, posting a 15-under-par 273 to cut a huge Northern Colorado second round lead down to a single shot at one point late in the round. WSU entered the round in a tie for third, 13 shots behind the Bears, but the team came out hot early, going 11-under-par over the first nine holes. The Wildcats' five players combined for 10 birdies and an eagle without making a single bogey on the front nine.
"I have never had more fun as a coach or been more proud of a team," said WSU head coach Scott Erling. "To start the round 13 strokes back and to go 15-under and make a run like that was amazing. We didn't win, but I absolutely loved the effort from our entire team. The future is really bright for this group."
Jayce Frampton led the way for the Wildcats on the day, shooting a 7-under-par 65 on the day behind six birdies and an eagle against a single bogey on the day. Frampton added his 65 to scores of 73 and 70 for a tournament total of 8-under-par 208 to tie for second place.
Reese Fisher joined Frampton in a three-way tie for second place overall after carding six birdies and a 4-under-par 68 in the final round. Frampton posted his 8-under-par 208 with rounds of 73 and 67 along with his final-round 68.
Hunter Howe matched Fisher in the final round with a 4-under-par 68 of his own after recording four birdies and an eagle on the day. For the tournament, Howe shot rounds of 73, 75 and 68 for an even-par 216 to tie for 14th place overall.
Boston Watts also tied for 14th place at even-par 216. He recorded rounds of 76 and 68 before and even-par 72 on Sunday.
Sean Badger, the lone senior on the team, rounded out the Wildcats with a 31st place finish behind rounds of 77, 79 and 73.
Northern Colorado posted a 4-under-par final round to hang on to the team lead, winning their second-straight Big Sky Conference title with a tournament total of 846 behind rounds of 285, 277 and 284. Weber State finished at 848 with rounds of 295, 280 and 273, while Hartford finished third at 858.
Frampton and Fisher finished just one shot shy of Southern Utah's Jake Vincent, who earned the individual medalist honors with a 9-under-par total of 207. Frampton and Fisher each earned All-Tournament honors for their second place finishes.
Over the final two days, Weber State went 23-under-par, eight strokes better than any team in the field, and overall the Wildcats recorded their best team finish since the league brought men's golf back in 2015.
