WSU splits double header in WIldcat Invitational

OGDEN - For the first time in 10 years, Weber State volleyball started their season at home and made it even better by picking up a 3-1 win over UNLV. WSU ended up splitting the opening day of the Wildcat Invitational by later falling to Portland 3-1.
What head coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "There was a lot of ups and downs today in our first two games. A lot of good to take away and a lot of things we need to learn. This is a tournament with some very good volleyball teams and it will help us grow if we can get consistent at learning and applying our lessons."
GAME 1-
How it happened:
WSU started set one off trailing 12-10 and then proceeded on a 7-0 run to take a 17-12 lead. UNLV answered with a 9-3 lead to tie it up at 22-22. A Rylin Roberts kill and two UNLV errors gave WSU the 25-22 first set.
In the second set, WSU started out strong with a 10-8 lead but UNLV had a 5-1 run to take a 15-10 lead. A big kill by Sam Schiess ended the WSU drought and sparked a 5-0 Wildcat run and ended that run with a kill by Kennedy Williams to tie it up at 16-16.
WSU's defense on the net was a big factor in the second set. Two big blocks and a kill by Megan Gneiting and another by Williams tied the game up at 20-20. After a back and forth battle UNLV pulled out the 26-24 victory in the second set.
Weber State had a sluggish start in the third set but a 6-0 run gave Weber State momentum to take a 12-9 lead. The Wildcats finished out the third set on a 7-2 run and Rylin Roberts slammed down a big kill to give WSU the 25-17 third set win.
WSU was up 2-1 heading into the fourth set and started out slow trailing 11-6. Weber State then went on a 7-0 run to take the lead back. With four of those seven points coming off of power swings from Williams. The set was tied up at 18-18 and WSU went on a 6-2 run to bring things to match point. Thanks to a UNLV error, Weber State came away with a 25-23 victory and an overall match win with a score of three sets to one.
Offensively: Weber State was led by Williams who had 14 kills from 29 swings and only one error for an impressive .448 hitting percentage. Megan Gnieitng also hit in double digits with 10. Ashlyn Power recorded 39 assists. WSU ended the match with 47 kills from 138 attacks and had 15 errors for a .232 percentage. WSU also had eight service aces.
Defensively: The Wildcats recorded 67 total digs with four 'Cats recording double digits. Katelyn Erwin led the way with 19. Gneiting had a double double as she recorded 15 digs and her 10 kills. Power also had a double double with her 14 digs. Roberts ended the night with 10 digs.
Hannah Hill-DeYoung had seven block assists and one solo for eight on the night. Gnieting was also a force on the net as she recorded six blocks. Weber State ended with 11 total team blocks
Notes to know: WSU is now 15-31 in the season openers. This was the first time WSU has hosted the Rebels since 1978.
GAME 2 -
How it happened: Weber State went on a 6-0 run early in the first set. Thanks in large part to Megan Gneiting's five straight serves. The Wildcats had a 10-5 jump on the Pilots. After that initial jump, Portland got as close as two points the remainder of the set and WSU finished with a 25-17 win.
The Wildcats trailed 6-1 early in the second to the Pilots. Portland didn't give Weber State any room for errors as the Pilots pushed their lead to 14-7. Weber State couldn't recover after that and fell 25-16 in the second set.
WSU regained control of the match in the third set taking a 14-7 lead. UP didn't let that stand for long and came back and tied it at 19-19 quickly took a 21-19 lead. Portland ultimately came away with the third set victory 25-20. The Pilots outscored the Wildcats 15-4 at the end of the third set.
The Wildcats put a valiant effort into the start of the fourth set and even made a surge at the end to make it interesting, however, the efforts were futile as Portland came away with the fourth set 25-20 win and an overall match win three sets to one.
Offensively: The Wildcats were led by Megan Gneiting who had 10 kills from 36 attacks and four errors. Rylin Roberts was close behind with nine kills. Ashlyn Power had 37 assists. WSU ended with 43 total kills from 135 attacks and 22 errors.
Defensively: Roberts led WSU with 12 digs in the game but both Power and Erwin added 11. Roberts also added two solo blocks to the defesive effort. Hannah Hill-DeYoung had four block assists on the night. In total WSU had 64 digs and seven team blocks.
Next Up: WSU is now 1-1 overall on the season and will take on CSUN tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in the Swenson Gym for the final game of the Wildcat Invitational.
