Wildcats beat Cal Poly 41-24 in home opener

The Wildcats totaled 457 yards offense, including 275 rushing yards in the win, including two players that rushed for more than 100 yards. The Mustangs finished with 346 yards of total offense and the Wildcats held them to 164 yards rushing.Â
Cal Poly jumped out to a 10-3 lead before two touchdowns by the Wildcats in the final four minutes of the first half. Jake Constantine hit Rashid Shaheed for a 20-yard touchdown pass, then Josh Davis broke off for a 22-yard TD run in the final minute of the half to give Weber State a 17-10 halftime lead.Â
Kris Jackson started the second half with a three-yard touchdown run before the Mustangs recovered a fumble in WSU's end zone for a touchdown.Â
Davis came back with an 18-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to make it 31-17. Jackson added another touchdown that gave Weber State a 38-17 lead with 6:50 left to play.Â
Davis, the reigning national freshman of the year, finished the day with 14 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns. WSU junior Kevin Smith had 13 carries for 114 yards to give WSU two 100-yard running backs for the first time since November 2017. Jackson finished with six carries for 21 yards with two touchdowns.Â
Constantine was 17 of 23 passing for 137 yards with one touchdown before leaving the game with an injury. Kaden Jenks was 5 of 7 passing for 45 yards.Â
Shaheed had six receptions for 49 yards and Devon Cooley had five catches for 52 yards.Â
Senior Auston Tesch led the Wildcat defense with a career-high 11 tackles, with two tackles for loss. The Wildcat defense forced two fumbles. WSU's offense was a perfect 5 of 5 in the red zone with four touchdowns.Â
Weber State debuted two new video boards and opened the new Youngberg Football Center on the north end of Stewart Stadium, including a new team locker room.Â
The Wildcats are back on the road next week taking on the University of Nevada in Reno in a 5 p.m. Mountain time kickoff.Â
