Weber State falls 89-79 to BYU

SALT LAKE CITY - Weber State rallied back from a first half deficit but it wasn't enough to stop BYU as the Cougars beat the Wildcats 87-79 Wednesday evening at Vivint SmartHome Arena in Salt Lake City. Â

The WIldcats jumped out to a quick 16-15 lead before an 8-0 BYU run gave the Cougars a 23-16 lead. BYU led by as many as 14 points in the first half before the WIldcats cut the halftime lead to 41-32.Â

The Wildcats rallied back in the second half and cut the lead to four points at 70-66 with 7:47 remaining. BYU led by 11 points with 3:24 remaining before a 6-0 Wildcat run cut the lead to five with 1:47 to play but the Cougars closed the game on a 6-3 run to close out the game.Â

BYU shot percent from the field, compared to 47 percent for the Wildcats. WSU was 10 of 29 from 3-point range and the Cougars outrebounded the Wildcats 41-35.Â

Four Wildcats scored in double figures led by Zahir Porter and Seikou Sisoho Jawara each with 16 points. Jawara was 5 of 8 from the field and also had four rebounds and five assists.Â

Dontay Bassett started the game and finished with a season-high 13 points and Isiah Brown added 12 points and six rebounds.Â

The Wildcats are now 3-3 overall on the season. After the Christmas break, Weber State returns to Big Sky play next weekend. The Wildcats play at Idaho State on Thursday, Dec. 31, before hosting the Bengals on Saturday, Jan. 2 at the Dee Events Center.Â
