Weber State drops two at Marucci Classic

Weber State softball dropped both games on the first day of the Marucci Desert Classic. First, WSU fell 6-2 to in-state rival Utah Valley and later fell 7-0 to tournament host UNLV.Â
GAME ONE -Â
How it happened: Weber State was the first to get on the board against Utah Valley. In the bottom of the first, Landi Hawker tripled to center field. With one out and a runner in scoring position, Faith Hoe singled up the middle for an RBI.Â
WSU's defense in the top of the second came away with a three up, three down effort. In the bottom of the second inning, Courtney Pestka homered over the left field fence to put WSU up 2-0.Â
In the top of the fifth inning, Utah Valley tied the game up at 2-2. WSU's offensive spark fizzled as UVU's took off at that point. The Wolverines put up four runs in the top of the sixth to take the score 6-2.Â
WSU ended up falling 6-2 after seven.Â
At the plate: Weber State scored two runs from 10 hits with two RBIs. WSU had three doubles, one triple and one homerun. WSU drew five walks and had five strikeouts.Â
Ashlyn Visser led WSU going 4-4 at the plate with two doubles. Landi Hawker also had a solid showing at the plate with two hits from three at bats with one triple and one run across the plate.Â
In the field: WSU had 21 putouts and five assists. Brooke Moeai had five solo putouts.Â
In the circle: Â Mariah Ramirez started in the circle for WSU and pitched 6.2 innings. She gave up seven hits, three runs, three errors and two walks in the 27 batters faced.Â
Kate Donaldson came in and pitched 0.1 innings and gave up four hits, three runs and three errors. She had one strikeout in the five batters faced.Â
GAME TWO -
How it happened: UNLV wasted no time getting on the board putting up one run in the first inning followed by six in the following two, giving the Rebels a 7-0 lead over the Wildcats at the end of the third inning. A score which stood until the seventh inning concluded.Â
Takesha Saltern was the first Wildcat to record a hit for WSU in the top of the fourth with a single to shortstop.Â
In the top of the fifth inning, McKell McCuistion singled to the shortstop for another WSU hit but was left on base as the half inning close. Â
WSU's final hit of the game came in the top of the sixth, Landi Hawker singled to third base and despite runners in scoring position, WSU couldn't get the offense to carry any runs across the plate.Â
At the plate: Weber State was left with a goose egg on the scoreboard and had three hits with no RBIs. WSU didn't draw any walks and had four strikeouts.Â
In the field: WSU had 18 putouts and four assists. Ashlyn Visser had four point outs.Â
In the circle: Â Kate Donaldson started in the circle and pitched 1.2 innings. She gave up five hits and four runs with four errors. She had five walks and no strikeouts in the 13 batters faced.
Amanda Sink came in as relief and pitched one inning and faced 10 batters. She gave up two hits, three runs, three errors and four walks. She had one strikeout.Â
Jaclyn Gold closed out the game and pitched 3.1 innings. She didn't give up any hits, runs or errors. She recorded two walks and one strikeout in the 11 batters faced.Â
Notes to know:Â Weber State has a 3-4 overall record now on the season and currently on a three game losing streak.Â
Up Next: Weber State will take on Big Sky rival, Montana and have a rematch with UNLV tomorrow.Â
