Wildcats drop both on day two at Marucci Classic

Weber State softball couldn't find the luck in Las Vegas, Nev. on the second day of the Marucci Deseret Classic as WSU came away with a narrow 4-3 loss to Montana and later a 7-2 loss to UNLV. 

What head coach Mary Kay Amicone said: "We are working to make small improvements. We have a lot of room to grow." 

GAME ONE - 

How it happened: In the top of the second inning, Ashlyn Visser led off with a single to left center. Faith Hoe then stepped up to the plate and jacked the first pitch she saw deep over the left center wall for two RBIs. With one crack of Faith Hoe's bat, the Wildcats were up 2-0. 

Montana answered in the bottom of the second with one run from one hit and one error to trail WSU 2-1. 

The third and fourth innings went scoreless for both teams thanks to some strong defensive efforts by both teams. In the bottom of the fifth, Montana put up two runs and took a 3-2 lead over WSU. 

In the top of the sixth, Landi Hawker led off with a bunt down the third base line. Chloe Camarero laid down a sac bunt to advance Hawker into scoring position. Visser and Lauren Hoe both picked up walks. Weber State had two outs, bases juiced and McKell McCuistion singled to second base for an RBI. 

The game was all tied up at 3-3 after that and stayed that way as the seventh inning concluded. 

In the top of the eighth inning, WSU had a runner on second do to the international tie breaker rule. The Wildcats couldn't get the offensive power to come out and went three up three down. 

In the bottom of the eighth, the Griz capitalized on a Weber State error for the game winning run. 

At the plate: Weber State scored three runs from seven hits with three RBIs. WSU drew three walks and had seven strikeouts. WSU left eight runners on base. Landi Hakwer went 2-4 at the plate with one run scored. Faith Hoe also had strong numbers going 1-3 with one run scored and two RBIs. 

In the field: WSU had 22 putouts and eight assists. Ashlyn Visser and Courtney Pestka each had six putouts. Faith Hoe had four putouts and two assists. 

In the circle:  Mariah Ramirez pitched all 7.1 innings for WSU. She faced 36 batters and gave up six hits, four runs and two errors. She had four walks and two strikeouts. Ramirez now has a 4-4 record on the season. 

GAME TWO -

How it happened:
UNLV started things off  by putting seven runs up on the board in the first inning. 
WSU had some work to do to dig them out of the hole. 
In the top of the third, Courtney Pestka started things off with a single to left field. Takesha Saltern followed that up with a single through the right side. Landi Hawker also singled to third base to load the bases up. 

Ashlyn Visser came through with an RBI to put the Wildcats on the board. WSU trailed 7-1 after four complete innings. 

In the top of the fifth, Weber State started things off by putting a runner in scoring in position. Chloe Camerero singled up the middle for an RBI. 

The final two innings of the game went scoreless for both teams and the Rebels came away with a 7-2 victory. 

At the plate: Weber State scored two runs from seven hits and two RBIs. The Wildcats had one walk and two strikeouts. Both Saltern and Hawker went 2-4 from the plate with Saltern scoring one run. 

In the field: WSU had 18 putouts and 13 assists. Ashlyn Visser had 11 putouts and Chloe Camarero seven assists. 

In the circle:  Jaclyn Gold started in the circle for WSU and pitched to eight batters. She gave up six hits and six runs with six errors. 

Kate Donaldson came in to relieve and close out the game pitching 5.1 innings and gave up four hits, one run, one error and no walks. She faced 21 batters and had one strikeout. 

Notes to know:  Weber State has a 3-6 overall record now on the season and currently on a five game losing streak. 

Up Next: Weber State will take on in-state rival Utah Valley tomorrow.
