Wildcats Come Up Short In Greeley 4-3

10/24/2021 3:38:00 PM | Women's Soccer

After coming into the weekend with championship aspirations, the Weber State Wildcats finished their regular season finale heartbroken after 4-3 loss to Northern Colorado.

Throughout their conference schedule they've cruised past teams with the exception of Northern Arizona on a slippery night in Flaggstaff, AZ and were 6-1 and in control of their own destiny for a regular season Big Sky title as Friday afternoon approached. But after a 2-1 result in favor of the Montana Grizzlies, the 'Cats came into Sunday afternoons match with an opportunity to clinch a second seed in the conference tournament and perhaps a share of the regular season title if certain results around the conference went their way.

But seven goals and 90 minutes later, WSU was downed by the Bears.

Fireworks were what was expected as this matchup neared and the show began when Morgan Furmaniak knocked a header into the back of the net to give Weber State a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute with help from an assist from Taylor Slack. The goal gave Furmaniak her sixth of the year and she now leads the team in both goals and assists.

Then, in the 19th minute - the Bears found the back of the net to tie the game at one apiece before adding on another goal in the 31st minute to push ahead 2-1.

Not long after Northern Colorado took the lead, the 'Cats answered back and it was by way of Alexis Simpson who skimmed a header into the back of the net off a pass launched by Lauren McConnell. At the half, the bout between two heavyweights was knotted up at 2-2.

In the second half, the clash between the Wildcats and Bears raged on as pressure began to ramp up. In the 60th minute, Lauren McConnell used that pressure to make a diamond as she launched a shot into the back of the net after Trinity Kerr got her in scoring position with a pretty pass and room to work. The 'Cats led 3-2 at this point but it'd also be their final score of the afternoon.

The final 30-ish minutes was filled with high energy and physicality but the Bears were able to net two more scores to tie and then take the lead which allowed them to outlast the Weber State Wildcats in what will likely be considered a match of the year in the conference this season.

Due to the loss and other results around the conference, the 'Cats will head into the Big Sky tournament as the 4th seed.
