Wildcats Stay Atop Big Sky Standings With 3-0 Victory Over Idaho State

10/4/2021 4:59:00 PM | Women's Soccer

On Sunday afternoon, the Weber State Wildcats continued their strides of excellence by drubbing the Idaho State Bengals 3-0 on the Wildcat Soccer Field.

It had been a week since WSU saw action, they hadn't played since the previous Sunday where they had mounted a 2-1 come from behind victory over Eastern Washington after doing it just two days prior to the Idaho Vandals as well.

Despite the layoff, there was no rust for the 'Cats who have been surging ever since traveling to Oklahoma and defeating Oral Roberts 2-1 then battling the Oklahoma State Cowgirls closely but eventually falling 1-0. Dating back to those games, Weber State is the victor of 4 of their last 5 contests.

While the Wildcats have surged - the Bengals have struggled; they came into Ogden in search of their first win of the year and with aspirations of derailing WSU's momentum but after 26 minutes had passed it was clear that the first-place Wildcats weren't going to let that happen.

The game was scoreless through the first 20 minutes but WSU's daunting offensive pressure that has seemingly gotten stronger each week was becoming troublesome for ISU and then with 20:56 left on the clock WSU took a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from Taylor Slack who had scored the winner against Idaho back in their conference opener.

With that newly found lead and confidence beginning to surge, Weber State again found the back of the net when Sadie Newsom scored off a cross from Shea Christiansen. This goal not only pushed the lead out to 2-0 but also marked the fifth time the Wildcats had scored twice in a game and were previously 4-0 when that happened coming into the match.

While the Newsom goal was still digesting, Slack scored for the second time of the afternoon about 23 seconds later which brought WSU to a commanding 3-0 lead, which is the first time all year that they've eclipsed three goals in a match.

While offensively they were lighting up the scoreboard, they were even better on the defensive end. The Wildcats ripped off 14 shots while ISU was only able to get off 2 of them, both of those shots coming in the second half.

Kaytlin Bradley was in the box and recorded one save to go along with the shutout in what went down as WSU's most dominant showing thus far.

The (6-5, 3-0) Weber State Wildcats will take a break from Ogden and will hit the road to battle (3-10, 1-3) Northern Arizona on Fri. Oct, 8 at P.M. MT and arch-rival Southern Utah on Sun. Oct, 10 at 1 P.M.
