Wildcats Wrap Up GCU Kickoff with Win Over Grand Canyon

2/14/2021 2:57:00 PM | Softball

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Weber State softball team wrapped up their season-opening tournament on Sunday with an impressive 6-2 win over Grand Canyon, finishing the GCU Kickoff Classic with a pair of wins.

The Wildcats took an early lead with single runs in the second and third innings as Mia Rushton drove home Mariah Ramirez with a single in the second and Saree-Ann Kekahuna singled home Faith Hoe in the third.

Weber State tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning as Ramirez and Kekahuna went back to work at the plate. Ramirez followed a Faith Hoe double with a double of her own to make the score 3-0, and Kekahuna later singled home pinch runner Makayla Donahoo to make it 4-0.

That was all of the offense Ramirez would need in the circle for the Wildcats. The sophomore right hander scattered four hits and a pair of walks to keep the Lopes scoreless through six innings before GCU scored twice in a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, Ramirez allowed a pair of runs over 6.2 innings while striking out five batters to improve to 2-0 on the season. Amanda Sink came on in relief to end the GCU seventh inning rally, ending the game on a fly out.

The Wildcats put the game mostly out of reach in the top of the seventh with another pair of runs. Noelle Foster started the rally with a one-out double, and scored on a Kekahuna single. Katelyn Whiting later drew a bases loaded walk for an RBI and the team's final run of the day.

Ramirez finished the game with two hits in three at-bats at the plate and also scored a run and drove in another run. Kekahuna went 3-for-4 for the Wildcats, scoring once and driving in three to lead the Weber State offense on the day.

"Mo (Ramirez) was outstanding in the circle and at the plate today," said head coach Mary Kay Amicone. "Saree had a fantastic day at the plate with clutch hitting and key RBIs.
I loved our approach to this game and the progress we are making."

With the win, the Wildcats improved to 2-3 on the season, while Grand Canyon fell to 2-4. The team will be back in action Feb. 19-21 in Las Vegas for the UNLV Desert Classic, where they will face Utah for one game and UNLV and Cal-Baptist each twice.
