The Weber State softball team dropped its opening pair of games at the UNLV Desert Classic on Friday, as late runs by both the University of Utah and UNLV spoiled strong efforts by the Wildcats.
Weber State led Utah 3-1 through five innings in the tournament opener, but the Utes scored three times over the final two innings to steal the victory. In the afternoon game, WSU held the host-Rebels to a single run through four innings, but a four-run fifth inning led to a 5-0 UNLV win.
After trailing 1-0 after the first inning against the Utes, Lauren Hoe launched a two-run home run to left field to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. Lauren Hoe tacked on another run for WSU in the fifth inning, singling home Chloe Camarero.
A solo home run by Madi Jacobus in the top of the sixth cut the Wildcat lead to 3-2, and a pair of two-out singles in the seventh inning flipped the lead to the final 4-3 margin for the Utes.
Starter Kate Donaldson pitched a strong game for the Wildcats, allowing only a single earned run over 5.2 innings. Lauren Hoe finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Noelle Foster went 4-for-4 on the day.Â
The Wildcats missed on several opportunities throughout the game, leaving 11 runners on base.
Against the Rebels, the Wildcats struggled at the plate, managing only four hits and left all eight runners stranded against a strong UNLV pitching performance. After suffering the late loss against the Utes out of the bullpen, Mariah Ramirez turned in an impressive start in the circle for the Wildcats against the Rebels, allowing only two hits and a single earned run over four innings.Â
Lauren Hoe added one of the four Wildcat hits in the nightcap, giving her three hits in five at-bats on the day.
The Wildcats will be back in action with another pair of games at the UNLV Desert Classic on Saturday. WSU will face Cal-Baptist at 11:00 a.m. MT and then will have a rematch against UNLV at 6:30 p.m. MT. Live video and stats will be available for both games.
